GEORGE LAU

CERAMIC POTTERY ARTIST

"From Engineering Precision to Pottery Passion: Where Tradition Meets Innovation"

Artist Statement

“It's ironic ... the difficulty of working with clay is to show that it is building it with your hand, but yet fingerprints are not allowed on the piece!"

George was first introduced to pottery by his high school teacher Eric Godman in 1977.

To this day, George attributes his success in pottery to Mr. Godman, who inspired him with his pieces and techniques, and who gave George full access to the pottery room any time the school was open.

Following life's many twists and turns, George pursued an engineering career, and only returned to pottery after retirement. As a member of the North Delta Pottery Guild and North Delta Artisan, George is focusing on learning more on the traditional ways of making, firing, and glazing pottery.

His craft balances form and function, using the potter's wheel to work the medium to its limit.
Currently, George is having fun experimenting with symmetry and asymmetry, and trying to incorporate it into functional ware.

Artistic Style

This artist’s style is a dynamic blend of technical mastery and artistic exploration. With a foundation rooted in the fundamentals taught by an inspirational high school teacher, their work now marries the precision of engineering with the fluidity of traditional pottery techniques. Specializing in both symmetry and asymmetry, they push the boundaries of form and function on the potter’s wheel, creating pieces that are as visually striking as they are practical. Their current focus on traditional methods of making, firing, and glazing highlights a deep respect for the craft while embracing innovative experimentation, resulting in functional ware that captivates and endures.
