“Evolving Landscapes: From Chalk to Canvas”
Artist Statement
I am a mixed media artist who likes to work in series, as each work becomes a springboard to the next. I've been enjoying working with acrylic paint on canvas and wood panels for the past several years with my main subject matter being the landscapes and cottages dotting our beautiful British Columbia coastline. My most recent works have started as white chalk sketches on black canvas and eventually, after applying several layers of colour until I have the intensity I want, I erase the chalk and the black gesso ground beneath it outlines the imagery.

Barbara’s Chiaroscuro Landscape style captures the dynamic interplay between light and shadow in the artist's mixed media approach, emphasizing the transformative process from initial chalk sketches to vibrant, layered color. The technique highlights the dramatic contrast between the black canvas ground and the rich hues of acrylic paint, creating a striking visual depth.
